Condition: print in excellent condition except for one tiny flaw as seen in the picture. Moshe Gat was born in Haifa in October 1935. By the age of sixteen his artistic talent had clearly manifested itself, and in 1952 he began his studies at the Bezalel School, in Jerusalem. In 1955 he returned to Haifa, where he taught drawing, and began to participate in the more important general exhibitions then shown in Israel. In 1957 he was awarded a grant by the America-Israel Cultural Fund, to further his studies abroad. He became a member of the Society of Painters and Sculptors in Israel, and held his first one-man exhibitions. The most important of these was in the Tel-Aviv Museum. In 1958 he left Israel, and after an educational tour of the museums of Paris and Italy, he reached Mexico. Several months later, two of his works were accepted for the exhibition of artists of Mexico; this was part of the American Biannual, which brought together in the city the best of American art. Here, the Director of the National Museum of Modern Art saw the pictures and arranged a one-man show for Gat at the Museum of the Palace of Fine Arts in Mexico City. In 1962 he held his first one man show at the A.C.A. Gallery in New York. He was a very famous painter.

Lesrel was twenty-two when he began his studies with the academic painter, Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904). Like many aspiring painters, he hoped to follow in Gérôme’s footsteps as a history painter of scenes from ancient Greece and Rome. By 1861, however, Gérôme had already begun to expand his repertoire to include exotic scenes from Egypt and North Africa as well as genre scenes based on French historical eras. For the young Lesrel, the scope of work that his professor was exploring encouraged him to consider a broader range of subjects as well. In particular, Lesrel was fascinated with the work of an-Louis Ernest Meissonier (1815-1891), whose meticulous, detailed historical subjects were beginning to redefine history painting as a form of documentary art. At the Exposition Universelle in 1867, Meissonier exhibited no less than fourteen paintings, an extremely successful venture and one that must have impressed Lesrel deeply.

After several years of study with Gérôme, and later with Meissonier, Lesrel made his Salon debut in 1865, launching a career that would bring him recognition and economic security for many years. The piece captures a highly detailed, crisp high-relief scene of Romeo climbing directly onto the balcony balustrade to embrace Juliet, set against an elegant geometric diamond-patterned background. The back reveals a fascinating negative impression of a separate classical relief from the casting process. It has a stunning, deep natural antique patina with rich verdigris oxidation.

- Subject: Romeo & Juliet Balcony Scene
- Dimensions: 9.25" H x 7" W x 3/8" D
- Weight: Approx. 4 lbs
- Material: Heavy Solid Cast Bronze
- Condition: Excellent antique condition with beautiful natural aging.
- Year made 1900

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0995/8611/3899/files/p1_72fe0978-7fd8-4449-9335-f24afcff5740.jpg?v=1785951998
antique-wileman-foley-pre-shelley-daisy-shape-jungle-print-7-25-tea-side-plate
Antique Wileman Foley Pre-Shelley Daisy Shape Jungle Print 7.25" Tea Side Plate
Pristine antique Victorian fine bone china 7.25" tea side plate, crafted by Wileman & Co.
