This is an authentic antique Chinese hand-carved black soapstone relief plaque depicting an Apsaras, the celestial female deity and spirit of the clouds and water. This highly decorative fragment showcases exceptional detail on the front face, portraying a serene facial expression and a deeply incised, sweeping ornamental headdress swirling like clouds or waves. Dated circa late Qing Dynasty to the early Republic era.

The reverse side provides diagnostic evidence of its age and craftsmanship, featuring deep, primitive, multi-directional hand-chiseled tool grooves left by the artisan during extraction. This heavy, solid stone tablet makes for a stunning freestanding desktop accent, bookend, or cabinet display piece for Asian art collectors.
